Imagine FSU's backfield lining up in 2010. Both Marcus Sims and Seddrick Holloway have moved on, leaving a big hole at fullback. Enter an experienced, bruising 6-2, 240-pounder ready to fill the slot.
If all goes well, that player will be Debrale Smiley. As we reported last month, Smiley is at Itawamba Community College in Mississippi. The Indians just wrapped up their season and Smiley finished with some impressive stats.
Though he didn't get much playing time until the last five games, the big guy from Thomasville ran for 569 yards, two TDs, and averaged 5.6 yards per carry. His longest was a 63-yard burst, and best game was a 180-yard performance on 30 carries.
"It took some adjustment for Debrale early on when it came to the personal preparation and mental approach to the game," says Itwamba's Offensive Coord., Jeff Carter. "But once he got settled in, Debrale really came on and I think got him ready for the next level."
Next big challenge for Smiley: Make good grades. As an academic non-qualifier for the Noles, he'll need to graduate from Itawamba to be accepted by FSU -- the same as current team members Corey Surrency and Markus White did.
