The truth is, you wondered how long it would be until the Seminoles fourth quarter cliffhangers would blow up in their faces. The day when Superman would lose his cape and Popeye couldn't find a can opener for his spinach. Only Indiana Jones can escape every evildoer's death trap at the last second.
So here's the silver lining in the debacle at Bobby Dodd. Now this team knows that its Garnet & Gold Guardian Angel will not be there every week to deliver a miracle comeback. The hard-bitten lesson to be learned is to get ahead, stay ahead and not let good teams off the mat (Miami, Ga. Tech).
To keep the intensity for more than two and a half quarters.
To stop giving away awesome field position on kickoff returns.
To create more turnovers on defense, even if it takes daring moves like a helmet on the ball.
This season is still the way station between not quite good enough and almost like the good old days. So now the Noles will need to do what Tech did after their disappointing second loss last week.
Get mad. Get re-committed. Get revenge. Starting next week against a team that's way overdue for some payback.
I've said before and will say again that I feel Paul Johnson will turn Tech into the first legitimate national championship contender the ACC has had since expansion. If he can recruit the type of athletes Georgia is getting from within the state to run the triple option in the next 3-4 years, I see the Dawgs slipping and the Jackets becoming a perennial top 10 team. Why no one plucked PJ from Navy before Georgia Tech did still remains a great mystery to me.
FSU should not get their heads down about the loss. The Noles still are in the drivers seat in the Atlantic. Wake despite their 3-2 ACC record lost to a so-so Miami team in what was arguably Miami's worst performance of the season and needed overtime to beat Duke. They were of course shut out by Maryland before that and have generally looked lethargic even when winning all year. I'd be shocked if Wake even finished 5-3 in the league, so FSU has a good shot still.
