Here's part two of our Q & A with Louisiana Monroe beat writer Tabby Soignier, in which she gives a heads-up that ULM will have the fastest guy on the field when the Warhawks come to Doak.
Q: Who will be the playmakers that FSU fans should look for on Sept. 3?
A: Besides QB Kolton Browning, receivers Luther Ambrose, Anthony McCall and Brent Leonard are also keys to moving the ball. Luther (pictured above) is the second fastest college football player in the country – only second to Jeff Demps of Florida. He ran a 10.12 in last year’s 100 meter dash of the NCAAs. McCall just makes plays no matter what is around him, and Brent Leonard is your go-to guy when you need a crucial third or fourth down conversion.
Defensively, I’m looking for big things out of the two ends Ken Dorsey and Troy Evans. Evans was the only preseason all Sun Belt pick for ULM last season but he missed the majority of the year with an injury. He should be itching to get back to his dominant form he possessed as a sophomore. I also like the linebacker corps. Mike LB Jason Edwards is a real smart player and can direct things from all angles, while OLB Cameron Blakes has a lot of speed coming off the ball to add pressure on the QB.
Q: ULM was seventh in the Sunbelt in Scoring Defense last year. What strides have they made to be a better D this year?
A: A: On a better note, the defense was first in the Sun Belt in rushing and second in total D so it wasn’t a complete loss. The defense has to do the same thing as the other side of the ball and that is to continue to grow up players and spend more time perfecting its technique and gaining knowledge of the game. The secondary was very young last season and so the explosive plays were a real problem. This year, the D returns all of those players and will be a lot more physical up front to help put pressure on opposing QBs.
Q: Is the team fired up to open the season against the Noles?
A: Ask me in August. Ha!
