On Friday, Tony Caridi, Voice of the West Virginia Mountaineers, was asked the question on the minds of all Nole fans: If West Virginia goes to the Big 12, will it still play FSU on September 8?
“I would doubt that very much," said Caridi. "I would think that game goes away…They’ve said publicly that they’re preparing to play in the Big 12.”
Interviewed on 790 the Zone, Caridi added that "Every single public comment that's come from West Virginia’s President and Athletic Director Oliver Luck has been, we will be in the Big 12 this coming season. At a recruiting event the other night, Oliver said we will be in the Big 12...I can’t give you the schedule but I can tell you that it’s filled with teams from the midwest."
Caridi says West Virginia's move for a quick exit from the Big East is currently being fought by lawyers. A Rhode Island judge handling the Big East's law suit has called for non-binding mediation. Caridi believes that's going on right now behind the scenes.
A quick remedy would be an out of court settlement allowing WVU to leave the Big East. Caridi said “he threw one of the numbers (dollar amounts) he heard at someone at WVU and they said we’re not even at the stage yet where a number’s being discussed.”
If an agreement can't be reached soon, will the ACC and Big East ever produce a 2012 schedule? Caridi believes that if there's no quick resolution, WVU will simply jump to the Big 12 and weather the legal consequences.
That removes a big hurdle from FSU's schedule, but leaves a hole to be filled at the 11th hour. Wonder if Randy Spetman has Charleston Southern's A.D. on speed dial?
